Home Maintenance Tips | August 2025

As we wind down summer, August is a great time to knock out a few maintenance tasks before fall creeps in. Here are 10 smart ways to keep your home in top shape this month:Seal cracks around windows, doors and siding.

  1. Inspect and Repair Fencing

Summer sun and lawn watering can take a toll on wood and vinyl fences. Check for loose boards, rot, or warping and make any necessary repairs now—before fall storms set in.

2. Touch-Up Exterior Paint or Stain

This is one of the last warm, dry months for exterior painting. Address peeling or faded paint and reseal decks, porches, or railings to protect them from rain and moisture.

3. Clean out Window Wells

Debris in basement window wells can block drainage and invite pests. Remove leaves, dirt, and weeds to prevent water seepage.

4. Wash Window Screens

Remove and gently scrub your window screens to clear out pollen, bugs, and dirt. It improves airflow—and the view.

5. Vacuum Refrigerator Coils

Dust and debris on your fridge’s condenser coils can reduce energy efficiency. Carefully vacuum or brush them off to keep things running smoothly.

6. Inspect and Secure Outdoor Lighting

Check for loose fixtures, exposed wiring, or burnt-out bulbs. With shorter evenings ahead, now’s the time to ensure paths and entries are well-lit and safe.

7. Trim Trees and Shrubs Away from the House

Keep branches and bushes at least a foot away from siding and the roofline to deter pests and allow for proper air circulation.

8. Drain Sediment From Your Water Heater

Flushing your tank helps reduce buildup that can affect efficiency and lifespan—especially important if you’ve been using more hot water in summer.

Taking care of these tasks now will keep your home in great shape throughout the season.
